HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY The property, known as Santa Maria Maddalena of Monte Nibbio, turns out to be the oldest “hospital” of the area of Todi. The ancient city of Todi, in addition to its many castles, could boast, until the 18th century, a great number of hospitals. Since the 12th century in fact, these buildings are documented to perform functions that were more like assistance to the pilgrims, wayfarers and confreres.. The term hospital from the Latin “hospitium”, stood for a sheltered place of hospitality and welcome to have a secure place to stay and to restore after a long journey, a place where members of a religious brotherhood were able to receive or assist other brothers as well as giving them also a place to sleep. These were obviously buildings along the main communication routes, as well as suitable architectural structures for receptive purposes, with churches and oratories. On the other hand, in the Middle Ages every monastery, every corporation owned its own hospital. The hospital of Monte Nibbio was located along the ancient Via Amerina that linked Amelia to Todi. It is therefore easy to imagine a large influx of merchants, wayfarers and above all pilgrims along this route in the direction of the main destinations such as, Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela. According to the first document concerning this property, dated 1206, the hospital would have been built between the end of the twelfth century and the earliest years of the thirteenth century and it is indicated as belonging to the ancient order of San Lazzaro, born in Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades. At the end of the 16th century, with the end of the order of San Lazzaro, linked with its affairs to the numerous hospitals located throughout Europe, the function of hospitals failed. In Todi, the church and the hospital at Monte Nibbio property passed to the Benedictine nuns of the Monastery of the Militia. With the Unification of Italy and the suppression of all the assets to the religious congregations, the entire complex was bought up for auction by Count Lalli who used it as a holiday resort and the center of an important agricultural company. Even today the name of the toponym Ospedaletto remains, in memory now fading of an ancient and significant past history.
