The castle in fact dominates the underlying plain, on which flows the Naia, a stream that originates from the Martani mountains, in Poggio Azzuano in the province of Terni and flows into the Tiber near Pontecuti di Todi, after a path of twenty-eight kilometers. It was demolished several times in 1447 and in 1451 by the Municipality of Todi and that of Spoleto, Mezzanelli was rebuilt shortly after in 1467 at the expense of its inhabitants. In the year 1500 it was again attacked and destroyed by the troops of Pope Alexander VI, who had conquered Acquasparta. In 1551 Torquato di Paride, count of Baschi, sold half of his fief to Isabella Liviani and her husband Gian Giacomo Cesi.
